Another Depp movie... this guy is box office gold. Lots of theaters for this kind of movie also. Reviews are good so far. Personally, the movie looks average at best. Put a regular actor in there and you would have a shitty flick.

Yeah without Depp it would only be good for maybe 15 million tops, which is what Dreamcatcher did, but with the wild card Depp I'm not sure what to expect, maybe Hidalgo type numbers, or better?

Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which came out right after Pirates, did 23.4. So we're looking for a number between 15 and 23.4.

LOL

Lord.

I have not seen any projections or numbers for this movie, but I'm willing to go on record as saying it will not clear 12 million dollars. King adaptations are notorious stinkbombs. Even the ones that turn out well - like "Shawshank" - don't find an audience until years after the fact, on cable or DVD.

King's last few movie adaptations adjusted for Secret Window's screen count:

Dreamcatcher: $14.2 million
Hearts in Atlantis: $15.2 million
The Green Mile: $17.5 million

That's not too shabby. Combine that with Depp's career being at a high and horror/suspense doing well lately, and I say it goes over $12 million.

SOS,

Why is adjusting for a screen count pertinent? That would only have value if there was some kind of "spillover" and ticket holders could not get into shows due to limited seating. None of those movies grossed enough for that to be a factor:

"Hearts in Atantis" grossed around 9 million; "Green Mile" had Tom Hanks. I'm really at a loss to explain the decent weekend for "Dreamcatcher."

The movie has no particular hook or point of interest to attract a large audience. It's not a story that even really needed a big-screen treatment. Gil is right - except for Depp, this gives off the vibe of a USA Network Movie of the Week.

Not over 12. Maybe around 9, but not over 12.

Looks like Lee's Movie Info has predicted the SECRET WINDOW will make 11.4 million it's 3-day opening.

Once in a while Lee gets lucky and nails one, but, didn't he predict under 40 million for Passion of the Christ's 3 day? Box Office Reports forecast is usually close to what the lines end up being and they have it at 19.

Not sure if I want to take the under 22.5 at Wsex or not. I suppose this movie could do better than Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Royler, did you see that you can get 5-1 odds on under 15 at Intertops? Easy money, right?

Yeah Royler... there you go bud. I still think Secret Window isn't going to do that good. It's NOT on the buzz charts, and it only landed the top ten chart early this morning. Buzz is average. Remember when Julia Roberts last movie burned at the box office. It doens't matter who you are, how big a star, if the concept sucks, then the movie sucks... and does shitty. Actually.. there is value in 15 million and under for 5/1 $300 gets you back $1800 big ones.!!!

Its not going under 15. It was on the moviefone chart at #8-5 starting yesterday, which is pretty good. Plus, the stock is trading at over 60 bucks a share, which means most people think its going over 20.

Well, only the fact that the line is so high makes me a little wary of taking the under, but other than that I'll stick with my 15-23.4 prediction and say that it's a lot more likely that it goes under than over. That said, with the current hype surrounding Johny Depp, I wouldn't be surprised to see it make 23 so it's only a 1 unit play for me.

The Secret Window
under 22.5 -115 1.15 units

overall:
3-3 +1.85 units

alright this is a bit of a hedge with the possibility of a middle:
add: Secret Window 21 to 25.9 million +120 1 unit

the reason I'm doing this is besides the good performance on Moviefone.com, it's also getting a particularly large amount of traffic on certain message boards. I can't see it really going over 25.9, but with these 2 factors maybe it can do as well as Once Upon a Time in Mexico, with a genre (horror/suspense) that is very popular among the teenage crowd with currently one of the hottest actors out there. Aside from the trailer, which in my opinion is mediocre rather than aweful.

Good Plays. You could score big. Cody banks is still at 12 million at wsex... maybe 15 million or more at Intertops isn't a bad play for +400.

I wish I would have posted my Oscar plays... but I did them rather late. I scored pretty good. 4-1. I think JC Cambert was playing you all. His picks were a joke.

this was a bad year, obviously, to bet on underdogs in the Golden Globes and Oscars. The clear front-runners didn't really have much competition to speak of. The closest race, best actor, still went to the favorite, even. Anyways the first Cody Banks didn't go much over 14 so I don't see this one doing any better than that. If I had to chose I'd say under 12. That last spy kids movie totally bombed, kids might be growing tired of the genre.

Hey Oren,

I think Cody Banks 2 is going to SUCK at the box office. What do you think? I took 7.5 -10.9 million. No buzz.
